From Blueprint to Skyline: History of Burj Khalifa

• Name Origin: Let’s start with how it came to be named Burj Khalifa, when initially it was supposed to be called Burj Dubai. Well, ‘Burj’ literally translates to tower, and it was supposed to be named the Dubai tower. Yet it was renamed to honor the late ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who supported Dubai during the financial crisis of 2008 

• Planning and Vision: With the evolving global economy, Dubai set out to diversify its economy beyond oil in the early 2000s. Aiming tourism at its core, the country planned to become an international hub for innovation, luxury, and culture, building real estate and finance, focusing on tourism. Dubai’s leading real estate developer was then tasked with crafting a landmark that would put Dubai on the world map for its uniqueness. And with an amalgamation of innovation, creative architecture, and leisure, Burj Khalifa was planned to be an unmatched experience for visitors. • Project Milestones: The project took about 6 years to complete, with its groundbreaking in 2004. Later in 2007, it became the tallest structure, surpassing Taipei 101 with its swift progress. And finally, on 2010 January 4 it was officially inaugurated, coinciding with the accession of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

• Design Inspiration: As it was supposed to be an attraction and represent the essence of Dubai, its inspiration derived from the Hymenocallis flower, which is a star-shaped desert flower. There emerged the triple-lobed base of the tower's design, and the Y-shaped floor plan is designed to maximize space, stability, and view. As the tower ascends, you see it spiraling until the single central core emerges at the top in a carved pinnacle. The whole design is carved of the onion domes symbolizing reaching towards heaven, prevalent in Islamic culture. With this spiritual essence, this structure is quite functional and practical, as the curved design diverts snow and rain. 

• Structure & Interiors: The structure was built by using reinforced 330,000 cubic meters of concrete, 39000 tons of steel rebar, along with 22 million man-hours to complete the whole structure. Its interiors are furnished by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP in collaboration with Nada Andric, harmonizing heritage and local culture with classic design. To embed comfort and luxury, interiors were carefully selected, along with 1000s of artworks crafted by Middle Eastern and international artists.

• Innovation in Action: High-performance concrete had to withstand Dubai’s extreme heat, which was delivered to record-breaking height with special pumps. The building's exterior cladding is composed of a double-layered glass set within aluminium frames. Each glass panel features an energy-saving silver coating to reduce heat and glare. Its tallest height spire was constructed from inside and jacked to its full height using a hydraulic pump; it is also an integral part of the overall structural design and internal communication equipment.
